Convert user mailbox to shared mailbox in 365

You may find a situation in which you wish to remove the licence from a 365 mailbox without having to delete all the data it contains. This can be done by converting the mailbox to a shared mailbox. This will prevent any users from logging into the mailbox directly however all data will remain stored.

To convert a mailbox to a shared mailbox follow the below instructions:

  • Run the following command
$UserCredential = Get-Credential
  • This will open a prompt. enter the credentials of your 365 admin account. Then run the following two commands:
  • $Session = New-PSSession -ConfigurationName Microsoft.Exchange -ConnectionUri https://ps.outlook.com/powershell/ -Credential $UserCredential -Authentication Basic -AllowRedirection
Import-PSSession $Session
  • You will now be connected to office 365 through the powershell window. Now run the following command:
  • Get-Mailbox <primary SMTP address> | Set-Mailbox –ProhibitSendReceiveQuota 5GB –ProhibitSendQuota 4.75GB –IssueWarningQuota 4.5GB –type shared

The mailbox will have now been converted to a shared mailbox. for more information please view the following article:
